PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

Nice, but what does that mean? I can't agree totally to what posted on
What is PHP

PHP should be more than just a programming language!

Hi Mario2027,

I have the same view with your comment. PHP was firstly intended for web development to create dynamic web pages. PHP handles freeing all resources. Users do not necessary to free file handle resource, memory storage, etc. PHP4 also have ref count feature. Characterization regarding RC feature in PHP4 would be extremely useful to write better PHP4 scripts also.

PHP, which stands for "Hypertext Preprocessor", is a server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages.
Much of its syntax is borrowed from C, Java and Perl with some unique features thrown in.
The goal of the language is to allow Web developers to write dynamically generated pages quickly.

PHP is a server-side language, which means nothing can be done dynamically without using other technologies, such as AJAX. Recently I was asked to generate an picture slideshow using only PHP, but I told the man the only way to do it with strictly PHP was to make use of sleep() or usleep() (which each delay the page loading). What people need to understand is that PHP is not an event oriented language like JS. It cannot handle or 'do something' as it happens.
