Quote:

[[email protected] konrad]# lynx -source http://go-pear.org/ | php
Welcome to go-pear!

Go-pear will install the 'pear' command and all the files needed by
it. This command is your tool for PEAR installation and maintenance.

Go-pear also lets you download and install the PEAR packages bundled
with PHP: MDB2, Net_Socket, Net_SMTP, Mail, XML_Parser, PHPUnit.

If you wish to abort, press Control-C now, or press Enter to continue:

HTTP proxy (http://user:[email protected]:port), or Enter for none::

Below is a suggested file layout for your new PEAR installation. To
change individual locations, type the number in front of the
directory. Type 'all' to change all of them or simply press Enter to
accept these locations.

1. Installation prefix : /usr
2. Binaries directory : $prefix/bin
3. PHP code directory ($php_dir) : $prefix/share/pear
4. Documentation base directory : $php_dir/docs
5. Data base directory : $php_dir/data
6. Tests base directory : $php_dir/tests
7. Temporary files directory : $prefix/temp

1-7, 'all' or Enter to continue:

The following PEAR packages are bundled with PHP: MDB2, Net_Socket,
Net_SMTP, Mail, XML_Parser, PHPUnit.
Would you like to install these as well? [Y/n] : n

Loading zlib: ok
Downloading package: PEAR-stable......ok
Downloading package: Archive_Tar-stable....ok
Downloading package: Console_Getopt-stable....ok
Downloading package: XML_RPC-stable....ok
Bootstrapping: PEAR...................(remote) ok

You might be missing the xml extension for php.

Copy the following code snippet into a php file, eg. config.php

<?php phpinfo() ?>

then load config.php into your browser.

You will see *ALOT* of php configuration information. Pages of it.

Look for the xml extension, near the end of the loaded modules section. There should be a few lines of information, like:

    xml
    XML Support active
    XML Namespace Support active
    libxml2 Version 2.6.27

If that's missing, then you will need to install the php-xml extension that comes with you OS distro.

I have a similar problem.
I have the latest pear installed by installing an old version 1.3.5 then upgrading using the method documented to the latest 1.6.1. My php is version 5.2.3 and the xml extension is definately loaded.

The pear command works just fine for me.

But if i type the pecl command at a console prompt I get a whole list of warning messages, (much too many to post here but will post the first warning) and eventually the XML extension not found.

The first warning message is :-

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in Command.php on line 263

make sure the xml extension is installed then edit /usr/bin/pecl to add this:
-d extension=/usr/lib/php/extensions/xml.so

so file would look something like this
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/php -C -n -q -d include_path=/usr/share/pear \
-d extension=/usr/lib/php/extensions/xml.so -d output_buffering=1 /usr/share/pear/peclcmd.php "[email protected]"

now it works.
