Pear install problems in Windows environment

Environment: Windows XP Service Pack 3, IIS, PHP 5.3.5 (from phpinfo()),
Browser: Internet Explorer 8
PHP install directory C:\php
Pear install directory: C:\php\pear
The Windows PATH includes C:\PHP\PEAR; C:\Program Files\PHP\; . . .

I can not get the package manager to work correctly. I have tried a few different install approaches, but none have been totally

successful. I've tried:

(1) go-pear.bat (didn't run),

(2) manual install per http://www.geeksengine.com/article/install-pear-on-windows.html (able to run through the verification test

OK, but package manager has problems), and

(3) http://pear.php.net/go-pear.phar and php go-pear.phar (got a message saying the process completed, but it was then

followed by the message - "Warning: Can not determine the URL of the freshly installed Web Frontend (file:

c:\php\pear\index.php) Please access it manually!").

I can run http://localhost/php/pear/PHP_Info.php runs successfully, but http://localhost/php/pear/index.php gives an error screen

saying "The website can not display the page . . . HTPP500 . . . ". When I changed the assignment statement for the $pear_dir

variable in index.php from $pear_dir = '@[email protected]'; to $pear_dir = 'c:\php\pear'; I'm asked for login credentials to connect to

my PC (I used Administrator) and then get the error message "Error: the template directory

(C:\php\data\PEAR_Frontend_Web\data\templates) is not a directory, or not readable. Make sure the 'data_dir' of your config

file (C:\php\data) points to the correct location !"

A second issue - when I run C:\>pear version I get:

(1) a php.exe - Entry Point Not Found error message box with the message "The procedure entry point

zend_rebuild_symbol_table could not be located in the dynamic link library php5ts.dll" with an OK button to click followed by

(2) 14 more error message boxes with OK buttons and messages saying other entry points could not be found in php5ts.dll,

followed by

(3) a php.exe - Unable to Locate Component message box with an OK button and the message "This application has failed to

start because php_mbstring.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.", followed by

(4) The following output which looks OK
PEAR Version: 1.9.3
PHP Version: 5.2.6
Zend Engine Version: 2.2.0
Running on Windows NT ROGER-PC 5.1 build 2600

I suspect that due to my various install attempts I've messed up some configuration files. Any help would be appreciated.
